The challenge

DGF Engineering had reached a point where improving inspection capability had become a strategic priority. Customer expectations were rising, inspection reporting was becoming more important, and the business wanted to keep growing while protecting the standards it had built its reputation on. Initially, the preferred route appeared to be an optical inspection system - on paper it satisfied many of the immediate requirements. But significant investments deserve independent advice, not assumptions.

Our approach

Every consultancy project begins with understanding the customer, not the equipment. Working closely with Operations Director Liam Fernard, we explored current inspection methods, component types, future customer requirements, available budget, growth plans and long-term capability objectives. We then evaluated multiple technologies rather than defaulting to a single supplier - attending MACH Exhibition together, viewing demonstrations, visiting manufacturers and comparing solutions in real manufacturing environments.

Challenging the original specification

After reviewing the available technologies and understanding where DGF wanted to be in five to ten years, it became clear that a modern Coordinate Measuring Machine would deliver considerably greater long-term value than the optical solution originally being considered. Although this represented a larger investment, it unlocked capability the business would otherwise have had to reinvest for later.

  • Automated inspection
  • CAD comparison
  • First Article Inspection Reports
  • Reverse engineering capability
  • Greater flexibility
  • Future scalability

Support beyond the purchase

Selecting the correct technology was only part of the project. We stayed involved throughout the purchasing process - supporting supplier communication, demonstrations, technical discussions, reviewing proposals, sourcing a bespoke granite stand and recommending complementary equipment - so DGF had complete confidence in every decision they made.

The outcome

DGF Engineering has invested in a modern metrology solution that supports both its current workload and future ambitions. The business can now provide customers with improved inspection reporting, enhanced traceability and greater confidence in every component produced - knowing the investment was made because it was the right solution, not because it belonged to a particular manufacturer.

"What stood out was that they weren't trying to sell us a particular machine. They were trying to help us find the right machine for our business."
"Without their guidance I wouldn't even have looked at a modern CMM. They challenged our thinking, organised demonstrations, asked the questions I wouldn't have thought to ask and stayed involved throughout the whole process."
"Even after we'd placed the order, they continued supporting us. That gave us real confidence we'd made the right investment."
