How it works

A modern metrology platform sits above individual device software. It ingests measurement results from CMMs, scanners, gauges and portable arms, stores them in a central database, applies SPC and capability calculations, and feeds MES, ERP or customer portals. Some platforms (PolyWorks, Verisurf) also drive the devices directly.

Typical accuracy

The platform doesn't change device accuracy - it changes what you can do with the data: real-time SPC, drift detection, capability studies across sites, supplier scorecards and audit-ready traceability.

Platform vs point tool

Individual device software gets you conformance decisions on a single part. A platform gets you fleet-level quality intelligence - drift by machine, supplier, shift and product line. For any UK manufacturer with more than a handful of measurement devices, the platform question is when, not if.

Q-DAS, PiWeb and the OEM tier

Automotive and aerospace OEMs increasingly mandate Q-DAS-compatible statistics from their suppliers. Zeiss PiWeb is widely deployed across their tier base. Choosing a platform that talks natively to your customers' preferred format prevents a lot of downstream pain.

FAQs

Do we need a platform if we only have two CMMs?+

Probably not yet - but plan for it. Choose device software that can export cleanly into a platform later, so you're not rebuilding programs in two years.

Can a platform drive machines and store data?+

Some can (PolyWorks, Verisurf). Others focus on data only (Q-DAS, PiWeb, WinSPC). We'll advise based on your device fleet and IT preferences.
