Reshoring and UK supply-chain resilience

Post-2020 supply shocks have driven measurable reshoring of precision manufacturing to the UK, particularly in aerospace, defence and medical devices. Make UK's annual survey has consistently reported reshoring intent above 40% since 2022. The metrology consequence is straightforward: reshored parts arrive with tighter documentation requirements than the offshore predecessors, and quality departments need inspection capability that can prove conformance quickly and defensibly.

EV and battery investment

The UK EV supply chain - gigafactory investment in the North East, battery development at UKBIC in Coventry, motor and power electronics work across the Midlands - is a major driver of new metrology capital. Battery cell, module and pack inspection combines large-volume metrology (laser tracker, structured light) with fine-feature inspection (vision, CT) in a way that few other sectors demand. Expect continued growth in multi-technology inspection cells over the next five years.

Defence spending and precision component demand

The 2024-25 UK Strategic Defence Review and NATO 2% target commitments have translated into real order books at UK defence primes and their tier suppliers. AS9100 and NADCAP compliance, ITAR / UK Export Control awareness, and traceable measurement documentation are all rising priorities. Metrology investment in this sector tends to prioritise defensibility over headline accuracy: the ability to prove what was measured, when, and by whom is worth more than a fractional micron improvement.

Additive manufacturing goes mainstream

Metal AM has moved past the demonstrator phase into serial production at aerospace tier-1s, medical implant manufacturers and specialist automotive suppliers. The inspection challenge is fundamentally different from subtractive parts: internal channels, lattice structures and near-net surfaces cannot be measured with a CMM. CT inspection, once a niche NDT tool, is becoming a mainstream metrology requirement - and VDI/VDE 2630-certified systems are moving from bureaus into in-house labs.

Industry 4.0 - beyond the buzzword

The realistic Industry 4.0 investment in UK metrology today is data pipelines: OPC-UA and MTConnect from measurement devices, Q-DAS and PiWeb for enterprise SPC, and MES integration that closes the loop back to the process. Full digital twins remain rare; connected inspection data feeding real-time process control is now common. The commercial payback is faster response to drift, not paperwork automation.

Skills, apprenticeships and the metrology talent gap

The UK metrology skills gap is real and widening. Experienced CMM programmers and calibration engineers are increasingly hard to hire, and vendor training programmes cannot keep up with demand. Manufacturers who invest in structured apprenticeships (via the Metrology Apprenticeship standard and partner schemes) protect their inspection capability far better than those relying on the external market.
